I had one set of Ultrasports and they punctured repeatedly, nearly every time I rode that bike. They really are rubbish. As a skinflint at heart it is the only time I removed tyres that still had a lot of life in them.

(And I just know someone will reply and say they've rode the same set for 10,000 miles without a puncture!)

I found that my Conti tyres ( GP 4 seasons, and GP 4000sII) were shockingly bad on the P*ncture fairy repellent front. If I'm just doing a short ride, their better ride characteristics, mean it's not really an issue. On a long ride, I haven't got time to b*gger about with punctures, so I put one of my bikes on Schwalbe D+. So far, I've worn 2 pairs out, with no intrusion punctures, in over 10000 miles. I suspect Conti, have tried to 'reduce costs' and have screwed it up. I can't prove that, but I do suspect it.

Personally, I would stick to what has worked for me in the past, despite a run of punctures. For me that is rubinos, so while I am contradicting you, I am not disagreeing with your choice

For me, rubinos last a little over 6000km (C4000miles). You know when they are done. I took my last Rubino pros on a 100km when they were solidly over 6000km, and @ianrauk had to help with 3(!) punctures.

(personal to ianrauk: I only used "p*nctures" to be a team player)

No tyres are puncture-proof. I've used Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres for years, and still get the occasional punctures.

It was the Contis I got the puncture on, yesterday's was caused by a tiny piece of flint which the Rubino Pro would have spat out.

I already have a set of 23c slick Rubino Pros but I'm going to buy a pair of 25's with the tread, like the 23's I run on the B'Twin.

[tangent]The problem I have with Rubino Pros is that I prefer to use 25s especially on a commuting bike but the 23s come in pretty colours.[/tangent]

My son, my cycling buddy and I all ride Veloflex Corsas, a superb tyre but quite lightweight. Yet we don't suffer any more punctures than anybody else; probably three or four a year betwen us. So what are we doing right?

How many km do you (plural, ie on average) get from these lightweight tyres? What are you doing right? Riding on smooth roads, unthreatened by urban detritus of a normal commute or the flints of some parts, perhaps?
Grip v good, puncture resistance relatively low, rolling resistance pretty low ie good, and durability rather poor.

Yes, we ride on empty rural roads in compact sandstone or limestone areas so there are no flints. I've no doubt that as commuters on city roads something more robust would be needed but for the kind of riding we do the Veloflex is a superb tyre with an acceptable level of punctures. For all three of us the superb quality of the ride and grip more than outweighs the relatively short life (on a rear wheel anyway) and fragility.
