I have used it a couple of times in 2011 and find it useful to ride from Audenshaw round to the far end then across to Evans cycles at the Trafford Centre. It is tarmac all the way, best point to join it is by Debdale park and come off at the new tram station at the other end, Perfect for skinny tyred road bikes or anything else you may have.

Where abouts at debdale is it?
I do technically live in Gorton, even if I am always at the girlfriends in Fallowfield

The old canal now also redundent goes under the old railway bridge at Debdale park reservoir . The old railway bridge being part of the Fallowfield loop and the old canal takes you to Sports City / Velodrome

This being North / West of the reservoir near the sea cadets / boat house / McDona**s
