I did consider that but I don't have the tools or the muscles to remove the fixed cup on the drive side... from what I have seen and read they can be right pigs to remove!

Also, as it's a Raleigh I am not 100% sure that I can replace it with a sealed cartridge type BB?

if it's 68 or 73mm wide shell then you can. (can still if it's 83, but it won't be.)
as long as the BB is compatible with the cranks then you're ok. (probably square taper but can't tell without a close up)
