i have only ever used one type of light, so cannot compare i use the fenix l2t & l2d the brighter pointing a little further along the road, i get at least 10 meters of brightly lit road ahead of me, no chance of hitting pot holes etc. admittedly not cheap and probably not the best answer but i already had one of the lights for my occupation so adding the second along with the brackets seemed to be good value.

I really recommend a headlamp i use a cheap £10 led type, but i find being able to turn my head into junctions making sure any approaching cars see me very clearly as of course bike lights dont do very well at illuminating to the sides of a bike.

as already said anything to maximise safety helps.

Bought from Halfords

I know Halfords does not appear at all popular on here but there is a large one right over the road from my office, I bought a bike hut set that were reduced from £52 to 34. They appeared allot brighter than the cateye version for a similar price. I believe the headlight is 650 candles and contains 5 LEDs. Tested yesterday evening on the same stretch in the dark (not quite such a dark night), felt much better. A very big improvement!

Asda do a rather nice set of Bell front and rear lights for around the £15 mark. Halogen and LED in the front (with 4 modes) and 1x constant 4x flashing for the rear. Provides a very wide and bright beam for the price and works well in fog.

+1 for Niteflux Photon Max. I bought one from Dales for £180 but Ebay do them for £144 +pp.

Excellent light. Amazing run time. I used it for 8 hours last week (predominately in 3W mode which is as good as my Smart Halogen). I use the 6W and 12W for fast (25 mph+ bits). After that it only took 3/4 hour to fully charge so there was loads left.

The Niteflux Photon Max was brilliant. Now it is getting lighter I was using it in daylight visible flash mode. The strobe makes all signs/ bollards strobe back and that gives the impression a police car is just over the hill. Makes them slow down.

HOWEVER. They failed to charge last week and Dales tell me importer cannot provide replacement battery and suggested I should change to Exposure/ Light and Motion etc units.

I have gone back to Niteflux in Aus to see if they have the same view on customer relations. Otherwise I have to choose something else out of the toy box.

Let me know how you get on.

I seem to be able to get some fantastic run times out of my lights too.
They lasted a full weeks commute set to low. For me thats an hour each way (10hours)

The downsides I've found is the switch on the battery is a hard to press in gloves. Changing settings is very hard while riding.

The flashing mode looks like a speed camera. Loads of dumb drivers slam on their brakes when passing the cameras at the same time as me.

The beam is very narrow so it's hard to see directly infront of the bike/ on twisty roads.

I can vouch for the Hope Vision 2. I had the Hope 1 led before and since upgrading the the 2 led, I can safely say that for road riding in the dark you will not need another light!

I haven't regretted the money I coughed up last summer for my Ay-Ups. Brilliant value, staggeringly bright, small and light. I charge the battery up once a week in a couple of hours and get a whole week's worth of light.

I had the Electron 5W/10W set with the bottle battery before, which were good but the connections went on the blink very quickly (on two sets of lights), and I had to charge the battery up every night to get a round-trip commute's worth of light.
