You can, providing the 'speed' of the chain matches (i.e., don't use a 10 speed link on a 7 speed chain).

Right...
Bought a new chain and fitted it last night...
Then spend about half an hour trying to index the gears and ended up worse than when I started... (the youtube videos make it look so easy!!)
So looks like I'll be on the old hybrid until I can spend a bit more time on it... Hopefully the weekend.
