Until I was about 25 a half bottle of brandy would always cure a cold. Doesn't work any more!

If you rub some on before bed and put on some socks it works overnight and quite well.

there is no cure for a cold
all you can do is avoid making it worse
some studies have shown that taking vit C whilst having the cold can make it go away a day or two quicker

Yes, sounds like a good idea, although I generally use it on my chest.As for avoiding colds altogether, my advice is: stay clear of your unhealthy non-cyclist work colleagues!
Hang around them long enough, and eventually you pick something up (or at least I found that a few months ago).
