Hi, not read the whole thread so i may be repeating something you`ve already been told, but......
I`ve taken a couple of electrical items back to tesco and It works like this.
Your receipt should have a helpline number, ring them and explain the problem. If they are in agreement that the TV is faulty they will give you a refund/replacement code, take the TV, original receipt and refund code to tesco. they will enter the code into their system which will confirm your entitlement to a refund/replacement or, If you`re unlucky, the right to a repair.
On the occasions I`ve returned items, both the helpline and store staff have been extremely helpful and polite. Hope this helps.

Until it is taken apart we dont really know. So a reasonable compromise is established by putting a time limit on the point when it is considered new or a later fault. The time limit should reasonably sort out if the fault was there from new or not but will not be an exact test.

I am guessing you have not worked in retailing! Customers try in on all the time! Even taking back stuff to a shop they did not buy the thing from, dropping something and then saying it is faulty etc. All retailers have to sort out a reasonable policy to support genuine faults and not be a soft touch for people trying to trick them (all within the law of course).
What is the issue with the item being fixed by the maker? Retailers dont have the skill in house to fix complex electrical items so they are always passed elsewhere. They are not saying the problem is not theirs they are arranging for the repair via a third party.
You'd be wrong on your guess. Fully aware that it is "tried on" by a few. Also had a few people picking goods of the shelf & trying to return them as unwanted items.
I've also worked on the repair side of things & seen some of the damage caused in order to get a refund. The only accurate what of finding out what the problem was, was by opening the item in many cases. In some damage caused in opening the items was clearly visible.
