I bought one of these torches (AA model) and I'm impressed. At first, my rechargeable batteries wouldn't fit so decided to get a round file (just under £5 from B&Q) and started filing out the barrel. Probably took less than an hour of elbow grease (not continuous I might add... just kept going back to it every now and again) and... hey presto, they now fit :o)

I actually filed more than I needed to as I plan to get some higher capacity batteries, just in case they're even thicker than the ones I've already got.

Got it fitted to a spare Smart light bracket I had... the top plate unscrews which leaves a hollow for the torch to sit in. I drilled a couple of small holes in the side of the bracket and fed some cable ties in, then wrapped around the torch to secure. Works brilliantly afaic!

A round file is either a 'Full round' or a 'Rat's tail' file.;)

Was it a Bastard?

No, there are slight but important differences.

I worked in a Foundry Stores for 3 years and never knew the difference.

My Tesco torch is still on original batteries although it's a lot dimmer now so use this one at dawn and dusk while the other one is still giving out the full brightness.

In local Tescos the 3W AA torch is £8 and the 3W C cell is £9. I've just bought the latter to add to my collection, actually the beam seems a tad tighter than the AA. Not tested it on the bike yet.

i'm using, alongside a 'proper' but not terribly bright light, a torch i got for a few quid with my petrol a few years ago, attatched via one of those lockblock things (very simple clever gadget). my torch has something like 18 LED's, is quite light and sturdy and is thus far the brightest light i've used for the bike. I havent yet ventured into expensive (to me thats more than £25) and / or rechargeable bike lights but i will do in the future as i enjoy riding dark, often unlit country lanes etc at night. (except in the current damned weather)

I bought (some kind of) coarse round file today and have been at one of the Tesco AA torches with it as the 7dayshop rechargeables I bought won't fit in it. It's hard work, but I'm almost there. Not really looking forward to doing the second one.

Just an update on rechargeable batteries my Energizer 1300mAh, 1700mAh and 2000mAh batteries all fit comfortably (the latter once an internal sticker is removed from the torch). I've still not used mine yet on a night ride; I bought mine just when the sub zero temperatures at night started and I've not had the desire to try it out on dark/ potentially icy country lanes.

PS my Uniross 2300mAh also fit comfortably.

i've lately taken to looking on amazon etc for good quality, lightweight and bright torches.....since i got my lockblock i'm thinking this is the most cost effective way to go with bike lights until i consider spending serious money on rechargeable bike lights. and of course keeping an eye on aldi, tesco etc.

So far all the batteries I've tried have fitted. I too have removed the sticker inside the barrel. Batteries used so far are:

Eneloops
Panasonic Infiniums
Uniross Hybrio

I have just spent a happy half hour drilling and reaming the frame holder from an Oxford Combination lock. I had just unpacked one and wondered whether I could use it to mount a torch to the bike bars. The frame mount even has a screw inside it so that you can turn the mount through 90 degrees so it will fit flat bars or stem. Once I removed the inner plastic disc from the "bore" of the mount, a 9 led petrol station special fits beautifully. It's now secured in place in the holder with a few inner tube rubber bands, and is so bright it's in danger of bringing down airliners.

I thought I had been really inventive until I read this thread.

Sulk.
