A 7 year old ex-hire Saracen must be worth about a tenner. If he was my boy I'd sympathise, tell him to learn some lessons from the experience and buy him another.

well our kid came back home earlier this year in tears. Her new Ridgeback Cyclone had been nicked. She confessed that she was not sure that she'd locked it up properly (happily this came out before I made what would have been a false insurance claim). She'd just had too much on her mind.

She was in her last A-level year. Everything, but everything was rush and worry (and boyfriend). We sometimes forget how fraught those late teenage years are.

And how. When they invent age reversal technology, I'll go back to my 20's any day - but not to my teens, thanks!

Thank God he lost the frame number. If had hadn't there would be a chance of him getting the 'orrible old thing back again!

Never mind teenagers doing it, I forgot to lock my bike one day last week. It was in the staff bike shed and no one touched it, thank God I have honest colleagues. I chose a good day to forget too, the next day the padlock on the door broke!

I don;t really see the logic in going to a great effort to secure such an old and cheap bike, past a simple lock. Yes, if it was a £800 bike, then he should take more care, but in this case, it's practically worthless.

I had a ten year old bike stolen out of my parent's garage.

a year later I was mugged riding home and had the replacement bike stolen.

i've since had an attempt at being mugged on a bike, he ended up jumping into a spikey bush as his mate shouted something random at me as I came round the corner

he wasn't counting on me coming round at 20+mph and not stopping

I must be getting old. I hate it that this sort of thing goes on and there seems to be more and more of it. I can't remember hearing about things like this when I was younger. Is the world going to h*ll in a handcart or what?

the being mugged on the bike I think was more an 18 year old who'd had a slightly sheltered life in a small, pleasant village coming to a large city to uni and not realising that the rough bit was worse than the local council estate
