Two man operation isn't going too well at present. God knows what it'd be like with one.
There's stations round here where the guard has to go to the rear of the platform to be in with a chance of seeing both ends, before closing the doors.

Guard is an essential part of the team and as you say sees stuff that cant necessarily be seen via a monitor.
