Yeah, I replaced a chain on my winter bike and was running fine on the stand - as soon as I put pressure on the pedals it skipped like crazy. Would only work in the big ring. I'll wager that's what happened with @ScotiaLass too.

It's been to the LBS, 2 mins on their stand and a quick tweak and it's running fine again. Any further nonsense and it shall get a new cassette!

If you were just changing the chain you shouldn't need to touch the indexing unless something's seriously worn, once you had the new chain on did you try your gears before you went to adjust them?

for my team I'd be glad to see Rangers stay down (for financial reasons of course)

The gears were a bit dodgy before, so I thought I'd set them while I was there
