The wind has cut my power off at least 7 times today. Each time that happens, I lose all the drawing I have done since the last auto-save, and then have to do a recovery. Two steps forward and one step back. So in the end, I gave up work, despite the harsh deadlines I am working to, and started packing. I packed for 3 or 4 hours, and can barely see where I have been. The removal men are here Tuesday.

Can you not save your work to a USB stick as well to avoid losing it?

It isn't about where you save it to, it's about how often you save it. I have autosave set to save every 15 minutes, so the maximum I can possibly lose is 14mins & 59 seconds worth of work. If it saved more often, it would compromise the drawing/computing speed, and that can be a big deal especially if you are drawing in 3D. I used to have a less stable version of the drawing programme, and got used to saving before certain operations, so it isn't just the saving that is a pain. It takes 5 minutes to restart the computer, go to the autosave file, change the file extension to a .dwg, give it a new name, check that it is the latest version of the drawing, save it, clear the recovery screen............and then you have to start repeating the drawing that you have just lost. It's a pain in the neck, and as soon as you get over it, the bloody computer switches off again.
