The translation I have for siput sedut is "snails" which is a sea or land creature inside a shell. But fried salted fish would be more like "sardines" in the US.

I'm still waiting on my cuppa. Asked for this morning Today at 02:37 !I shy away from using the word 'snails' bcos hereabouts it is automatically associated with tht of the garden variety and considered quite unpalatable here 'salted fish' is usually salted then dried in the sun and is a little crispy when fried, maybe more like dried anchovies (locally known as ikan bilis) than sardines.
Yes we do eat rice & almost everything else with our hands, although noodles would be much easier to handle with either chopsticks or fork

Typical lunch hereabouts.
White rice, grilled chicken breast & vege, a portion of siput sedut (I googled for an English translation and it came out 'cerithidea obtuse), a plate of fried salted fish and a mug of hot lemony water
