Didn't Joop Zoetimilk (spelling?) win the worlds at 40 and of course our own Reg Harris winning the national sprints in his 50's. Although the latter has been a bit tarnished subsequently.

He's had a few big crashes too.
The fear factor must kick in at some point, once you realise you are no longer invincible, so he probably has a splint second of doubt and doesnt take the gaps like he once did.

Greipel has just admitted to feeling exactly that!

Jens Voigt said something similar about descents. He knew it was time to quit when he wanted to say "Guys, how about we all go down this one a bit slower?" (Or words to that effect)

In a HTC era documentary Cav said "you know that voice you have in the back of your head saying 'no, don't do that'? Well ... we don't have that". Maybe he's getting it now.

And the sort of crashes he had lately, namely, the MSR one and the Sagan one were particulary scary.
I'm a little older than Cav but I'm in a similar place and rarely go above 40mph in a flat out sprint any more.
