i want to go to Nice for the TTT, but work (or the threat of not having any) means i can't really book anything.
being a Bonapartist, i wanted to go to the opening stages, but lack of dosh put paid to that.

What were the accomodation prices like? I am tempted but imagine the cost to be hiked up...

I am doing it as a package. I did look at diy and going to St Malo but the price got silly.

We booked well before xmas after spending quite a time looking at different options. Sports tours do a great package, but the price was silly money for what we wanted. Every option, car, plane, ferry etc was priced up (we are pretty seasoned travelers) and the Ledger one came up. We did opt for the 4* upgrade and yes the hotel is way out of the city, but not a million miles from a train station. We also get picked up from Taunton, so for under £300 ea we get to see paris, The Tour, and a mini break all in one.
Ledger get reasonable reviews and so fat they have been ok.
