It depends on the train 
Some trains only have a small space & you just stand your bike in it, others have various types of straps to hold it in place & some have hooks, to hang / suspend it from the wheels

From my experience most trains in central Scotland have a bar (a bit like a sheffield stand but on it side and smaller). The arms of this have corrigated rubber to hold the toptube of the bike and they are straps also to hold the bike. A couple of times I've come accross another type where bikes are held vertically by hooks and strap like solty says.
