Some of you might not realise most of the big shopping stores let you take your bike in with you, as long as its not covered in mud, and wander round to get a drink etc.

I regularly pop in to buy a top up water and a few plums (ooh eeer misses) or a sarnie when its hot out.

Both my local Asda and Tesco let me in. Only once has a security guard tried to stop me and the duty manager told him not to be silly.

Great if you don't carry a lock with you.

Sainsbury are also cool with bikes. I have yet to try the local lidl but I have been taking my bike into supermarkets for years. You get a few strange looks but you do clippidy clopping around in cleats anyway.

Given than a bike takes up a smaller footprint than a regular shopping trolley I am not suprised to hear they let you in with them.

Given the Health & Safety rules enforced by many organisations these days, I'm amazed that they DO!

For example ... I am not allowed to go in to my local waste disposal centre unless someone gives me a lift in. I don't drive and it is against their rules to walk in or cycle in. Once beyond the gate, it is permissible to get out of your vehicle and wander about anywhere on the site. Instead they enforce this silly rule ...

Rules and regulations said:
Pedestrians are not allowed to enter the sites: all access to the sites must be vehicular. Pedestrians wishing to deposit waste or recyclate at any HWRC** should stand at the entrance to the site and attract the attention of one of the site attendants, who will take the items from the person and deposit them in the appropriate container.

Some waitrose let you in. And I've had security guards at a Sainsburys and a Coop offer to watch my bike while I did some shopping. The Co-op was a little one, so bringing the bike in was probably not a good idea. Could have given the guy a hug, because I was halfway round a 200km ride and needed urgent snacks!

The Tesco near me won't let anybody bring a bike in. I think the bike policy is very much down to the local manager, not head office. Maplin have always been excellent and my local Shell petrol station lets me wander about the aisles with it. Having forgotten my lock, I once managed to stash the bike in a corner of the perfume section of Boots the Chemist behind the counter of an alarmingly beautiful sales lady.

I suspect that a lot of places would refuse you entry with a bike if you asked if it was OK but, if you don't ask, once you're inside they don't really mind as long as you behave considerately. There's absolutely no point in being militant about it.

I take my bike into my local Sainsbury's, and the staff have no problem with it.

The only time there was an issue was when some old biddy on a mobility scooter came up to me and started bleating on about how bikes weren't allowed in supermarkets. I have no idea what the logic of her complaint was (as I was taking up a fraction of the space she was) so I just smiled and ignored her

If I lived 100 yards away, I would be really annoyed that I couldn't stroll in there with a bag full of stuff to be recycled. As it is, I live a couple of miles from the site so I'd wait until I can get a lift anyway.

It's probably to do with insurance. "What if somebody got run over when they were walking in through the gate!"

A bicycle is a vehicle. Ergo if you go there on your bike, access is vehicular. You're on dodgy ground if you're pushing the bike, but not if you're riding it.

B&Q in Northampton let me park my bike in the Returns area while I shopped there..
