I bought a t-shirt online recently, and it arrived yesterday. It has a really nice Alpe d'Huez design on it, and I don't want to ruin the t-shirt the first time I wash it. The problem is that the transfer material is sticky to the touch.

Any tips on what I can do to remove the stickiness? I did some online searching, but found nothing useful, other than various comments saying there are several types of transfer, and I don't know which type I have on this new shirt.

I did try putting a thin tea-towel on top of the shirt, then carefully ironing them, but then found I had to peel the tea-towel off the shirt, because it had stuck! Fortunately the transfer wasn't ruined, so I got lucky.

Regards & thanks,

--- Victor.

You seem to have stumped us there as to recommending a solution . I know that some feel tacky for a long time but yours seems to be excessive .

I ironed it with the tea-towel on top 4 times, each very short in duration, and waiting for at least 15 minutes between each, and it's a little bit less sticky now. I'll try washing it using a gentle washing-machine cycle and a tiny bit of washing powder, and see what happens. Thanks for replying, anyway, even if you are both stumped!

No idea re the stickiness, but try ironing it inside out with a cool iron.
Still use the tea towel though.

As said, raise the problem with the supplier.

I had a t-shirt with a sticky transfer which I bought whilst on a cycle tour so was in no position to give it any special treatment. The stickiness passed over, and now after many machine washes is probably in better condition than the rest of the t-shirt:smile:.

It wasn’t a t shirt supplier from Germany by any chance was it? I recently bought a shirt from a supplier for our local Audax club logo for about £20. Wore it and noticed the logo was tacky/sticky. Washed at 30 with normal powder inside out and the black logo almost disappeared. It looks worse than my 5-10 year old gardening shirts. Impossible to rectify.

Supplier has said they will refund in full. Still waiting.

After numerous short and careful ironings (probably at least 10, over several weekends) with a cloth laid on top of the transfer, and with the transfer's stickiness getting slightly less after each ironing, I finally washed the t-shirt this morning, and it appears none the worse for wear:

Ah, well done. I've a new Pops Yoshimira T shirt with the same problem and I've been wondering what to do.
