Ah, beaten to it with Hammerfall ;)

..anyhow, a varied selection at the heavier (and mostly more melodic) end of things, some definitely with tongue in (someone's) cheek..

a rather catchy mix verging on eurovision-meets-death-metal (in a good way !) - probably one of my favourite finds this year - Amaranthe:

Europe (forget the Final Countdown, the rest of their stuff is kinda more classic rock and sometimes a bit bluesy):

(Meshuggah and Amon Amarth are another couple that come to mind, but I've not heard much of the former, and I find the latter a bit too grunty..ymmv)

Woah - how did I not know about those guys? Instant cd purchase...

I second most of your other suggestions - there really is a lot of quality out there. Meshuggah is a bit of an acquired taste, but they have recorded possibly the greatest metal video of all time:

I'll give Meshuggah another try.. ;)

I must admit I can't remember how I found 'em - either a record company mailing or an event mailing I guess - they've got members of a few other bands in their lineup and haven't been going that long. I've seen 'em a few times recently as the headline act- last december at the Borderline (a really small venue a stones throw from the building site that was the Astoria), and back in April at the Garage (kinda size venue Lacuna Coil and Accept have done in the last few years) - not full by any means but a decent turnout. I guy I often see was chatting to 'em at a meet n greet, sounds like they've a new album coming out later this year, so I expect there'll be a tour after that. Tho' other than a support slot with Kamelot and Evergrey last year (which I've not heard much of either, so another reason I'd not heard of 'em before) - and that was just London and Nottingham- they've only done those few London gigs. Unsurprisingly they seem to do a lot of gigs in Scandanavia, including some larger headline slots:

- looks like they were on at last years Female Metal Voices fest too.

The Borderline is a good venue, seen a few shows there.

Indeed ! - funny thing is, I've been living in London/Surrey since early '88 and last year was the first time I've been there. Guess it's a funny size for a lot of bands - the sort of place someone not that well known has a chance of a good turnout, next venue size up would be somewhere like LA2/Astoria2 when it was still there, then mebbe the Garage after that - as relatively central venues.
(I went to see a bunch of bands in Kingston (on-Thames) last week at the Robert Peel, 'bout the same size as the Borderline- rather felt for 'em, wet night/monday/students away/not in central London - probably not much more than a handful of us other than people that were friends of the bands  )

They put on some good acts, seen Steve Young, David Olney, Dale Watson, James Hand amongst others. They don't come over very often so the place is usually full.
