I keep mosquitoes off of me with speed often, they still get me going up hills sometimes. I can't outrun horseflies though, they are the ones I hate most. The bite hurts and they are tenacious but they are also stupid. I am able to kill a lot of those with my hands.

Maybe they take after actual horses, because those are a bit dopey as well

This evening I went out in a pink top. Got home in a pink and black spotted top. Flipping little black flies! Wore my glasses to ride, even though the clouds were black and the specs are sunnies, so it stopped flies in the eyes! Don't thing I swallowed any either!

I notice you had nothing bad to say about blue bottles.

These were the thunderbug type 'get everywhere' things. Particularly attracted to bright colours and as it was a little on the dark and cloudy side when I went out, I was aiming for being seen by car drivers. Stealthy flies obviously wanted a lift to my neck of the woods, so they hitched a ride

How many of them were alive when they got to their destination?

I went biking round southern France one summer. Was dressed in leather and absolutely roasting but I could feel what I thought was rain hitting me.
Got to the next cafe stop, took my lid etc off and I was covered in flies. Even my gloves.

Minging lol
