hi pale rider:smile: i saw that bike and was really considering it until i read the reviews apprently there is a common problem with the bike somthing to do with the gears and drive train which put me off. (even a decathlon response mentions it)

It's not so much 'that bike' as 'any bike for that sort of money'.

The next model up is a better proposition, having freehub cassette gears rather than a freewheel which is much less reliable.

Equally, if you spent £400+ in Halfords or Evans, you would get their better spec bikes than if you bought the cheapest.

Low to mid range Shimano Will be perfectly adequate for a commuter

Buy a bike on frame and fit, not gears

Have you read the reviews?

Looks like only smaller sizes are available, probably ok if you are 5'10 or less

hi vickster:smile: i only ask about gears because like mentioned earlier i had seen the bike Pale Rider posted the triban 500 flat bar but it apprently has gear issues with alot of people who bought it. i guessig i need to be concerned about the gears on what bike i chose as it looks like a real safety issue. or i missing somthing

Not heard anything about any issues with decathlon bikes. Brakes are important for safety. Don't know about the groupset if well adjusted although some reviews point to issues. If so, get a different bike. Acera serviceable

Go ride some bikes and buy the one you like. Can't do with the Wiggle one so you'd be taking a punt

What's your budget?

Why no drops?

Where in the country are you, so folks can suggest localish retailers who might have something suitable?

There are 50 bikes or probably more out there that will meet the £300 flatbar spec. On that basis, go to a few local shops, try some out, buy the one that suits you best
Everyone will suggest something different based on what we know. I like Whyte, Boardman, Trek are good too, I don't like Specialized but that probably won't help you

At £300, you'll get more bang for your buck (higher spec components, carbon fork etc) used. Better than some new no name 'BSO' from Amazon or eBay.
