Swapping parts

This is the original cottered shaft with a selection of the suitable shafts that weren't the right length to get the chainline right on the 3speed (can't post a photo of the one that was correct cos it is inside the bike)
There is also a 'sealed unit' BB partially disassembled and although it is the shortest it was for a triple (Came out of the Saracen when I swapped the cheap Shimano original with steel rings for a Truvativ all Aluminium one)

That's interesting and good info about splitting the BB , I'll have a go at that , as they say about skinning a cat ' also thanks to @sidevalve for brake info , a tripple would be usefull , so we will go with that if I can get it on , , think the brakes on it will be ok , new shoes , and friction shifters , I may go back over and take another look at it and get some pics , frame number etc if I can , stuck at home waiting for the new mobile to arrive,

Some will split others won't (some have a bearing tensioner nut inside) if there is a lockring then generally they'll come apart.

Phones arrived ! and on time !
Im going to Kingston to get my MTB wheel rim fixed , I hit a tree root and split it , i just get another wheel but its got a 20 mm mebob's on it to fit the the Bomber forks , lots of good info about getting around BB probs , may have to wait till tomorrow to see Raliegh again
