What a bunch of fantastic chanteuses Scotland's got besides - Carole Kidd, Maggie Bell, Karen Matheson... doh! and Annie Lennox, of course.

Not forgetting my personal favourite, Eddi Reader.

Let's not be unfair here. Susan Boyle is a nut case, and may have a face like a melted Wellington, but she's a great singer. Not a good singer, a great one, and she deserves to sell records. Few popular singers right now could compete with her range, articulation and feel. The people buying her material have taste.

I'm not a huge fan of the cover, but have to say I'm with Alec on this, saw them perform it live, was good then too.

As a side issue, I'm being constantly exasperated by the number of people who are not aware that Miss Doyle is in fact singing a cover version. But then again all these "X-Factor" types do, it's just so lazy and patronising. Or is it just me?

I don't have a problem with covers, after all the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra etc all sang each others songs with no problem. If the song is good enough it can survive reinterpretation.

I simply chuckle when people complain about people singing 'covers' - and I like Susan Boyle's 'cover' of White Horses, which surprises me :blush:

In the great scheme of things, the singer-songwriter is a recent invention. Ella & Frank didn't sing 'each others' songs'; they sang songs written by songwriters. Some of the best recordings are 'covers' - eg Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. And some of the most execrable - that bloody Alexandra woman's Hallelujah.

I quite like SB's Wild Horses...but I don't think it's a patch on Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. Doubtless someone will now tear strips off Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah...

Wild horses surely? White horses was the theme song to a 1970's kids program on a sunday afternoon.

I turned the telly off when she came on. She's just overhyped and the public will eventually get fed up of her very soon. Once her sales go down the media will lose interest in her and go on to someone else.

She has a whole load of voices in her voice - loads of moods as well as range. A very sweet tone to this one. I can't help it - it makes me cry.

Lulu, Sheena Easton , Lena Martell , Aneka :laugh:
