It's powder coated....I've dropped it and been rough. It still looks good. To repowdercoat doesn't cost much either. Win win.
You will like it.

I too thought about a Cross Check, but the long top tube didn't match my long leg/short torso body. So in the end I went for an All City Space Horse frame as the geometry is more suitable. They're both very similar frames, but the All City has a few nicer touches - ED coated for rust prevention and internal cable routing, longer wheelbase. Can be run geared/single or hub and clearance for 42mm tyres.

It rides really nice.

That's a nice looking bike. Are those Avid ultimate canti's on there? How do you find them?

Good spot.. I've tried all sorts of cantilevers (720's, Oryx etc) and mini V's (too spongy - lack of clearance) with mixed results, so I splashed out on the Ultimate's. Bit pricey, but cheaper if ordered from Tawain etc on eBay, but they are good, to the point where I no longer think about my brakes as they just work. I'd say they aren't quiet as good as a full V-brake, but they're not a million miles off either.

That's good to know, I quite fancy some myself. As you say, a bit spendy but I don't mind spending if it's worth it.

Looks like internal routing for back brake only?
The cross check has sliding dropouts and a mid size dropout gap so it will accept different hub widths. Also it will run very large tyres...I'm not sure how big but I've had 32's with mudguards with plenty of space left.
As with anything the fit is what matters most and what ride feels like to you.....try them both and see...?

It's an interesting diversion, but I'm pretty sold on the Surly CC.
I've pretty much built it (in my mind!) so I've a good Idea what I'm going to do. I might do a build up thread just to bore you all to death so you can see what I've decided on.

Look forward to it

Well, I've bought it.
56 frame in black. I've got my hubs and rims, cranks, brakes, BB and headset.
I'm off on my hols at the end of the week so I'll order my spokes when I get back and start the build.
I've never built a bike up from scratch before; it's exciting!!
