Col, if this puzzle had been printed in a newspaper, a lot more people would get it straight away...

And it also most indicates, if anything, that the students who got it wrong, were probably more cleverer than one might think

The answer is, the more I think about it, is that the original test, if it is real, would have been set by a cynical autist who sets these sort of tests during winter because he can't burn ants with a magnifying glass.
