That was the only bit we already knew.

Because I burn easily and also have psoriasis it's a bit of a gamble as to how much sunshine but one bit of information I've picked up from somewhere is that you don't generate Vitamin D in sufficient quantities unless you shadow is shorter than you.
Do they not put Vitamin D in your milk from the store?

I plan a 40/50 miler tomorrow when 24 degrees is forecast. So I nipped this morning for a travel size tube of factor 30........that is going in my back pocket.
Only a 30? I paid extortionate euro prices for factor 50 in Majorca a couple of years ago and still got roasted + sun stroke

I've never needed it in Northern Ireland though

A few years ago, I was cycling in South Wales

Weather forecast was dire.... yet in reality there was an unexpected heat wave.

So nipped into a Chemist to buy some Sun Tan Cream

As I do burn easily, I bought my usual children's bottle of high factor cream

Then went to the counter, where the pharmacist decided they needed to check my purchase.....

"How old is the child, Sir, this product may be unsuitable"

Me.... "55 years old"

The reply was met with silence and then.... "That will be £5.95"

I think that Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. It is biologically inert, so the bodily functions must make it usable by the body itself. The first process is in the liver, and the second in the kidneys, so the proteins may then be used by the body. This then, in turn, allows you to absorb calcium in your gut, as well as phosphates, and this is the real benefit of Vitamin D.

Got caught on my arms and legs by the sun yesterday, even though it was hazy most of the time I was out - so this morning it was a long sleeved top and Factor 20 (the strongest I could find in the house) on my legs.
Have to look for some proper sports sunblock next time I'm at the shops as the delightful smell of coconuts has been with me all morning...

Harumph! Still no sun here, another windy and overcast day.
Enjoy your sunny rides!

My arms are both burnt, but not my face - I don't think I cycled with bare arms for 6 months leading up to yesterday, but my face was protected by the winter. I wore long sleeves today.

Carabiner sunscreen now attached to carradice: I'm ready for anything an English summer can throw at me (extra layers of merino, and waterproofs inside  )

Where did you get that sunscreen from?

I've stopped with sun block because their ingredients are so unhealthy.
That's been my concern too. (Pale, freckly, vigilant with sunscreen but have had a couple sunburns in my life bad enough to leave permanent scarring. Longtime UV exposure a concern also.)
Discovered Green People a few months ago due to dermatitis. Trying their sunscreen this week.

Seems to be a physical block (titanium dioxide) not chemical block, but doesn't leave nearly as much white residue on the skin as physical blocks I've used in the past. So far so good. And much less toxic than mainstream brands.

Like the looks of this. Amazon has it over here.

It says water repellent. What's been your experience? Could I swim and ride?

I don't swim so don't know. I do sweat at the very sight of a bike though (oo, er) and so far I'm finding this sunscreen still effective for a sweaty bike ride of around an hour, coffee stop, then another hour's riding. Haven't tested it longer than that yet. Off to south of France in a few weeks which will really put it to the test!
