........Researchers at the University of Bath say that stirring table sugar into a water bottle before a big physical event could be the difference between success and failure. An increasing number of sports drinks designed to provide energy during exercise use sucrose or mixes of glucose and fructose - but many still rely on glucose alone. However, researchers found that combining different sources of sugars improves the rate at which people can absorb them from the gut........

........Scientists warn that such glucose-only drinks could produce gut discomfort and suggest sucrose-based alternatives - or simply sugar in water - can help make exercise easier........

Anyone want to try it and report back?

I think plenty of us have used sugar and a pinch of salt in homemade 'energy drinks' for a long time.

Interesting, although I follow a LCHF approach so tend to head out with just water or a peppermint tea brew made the night before with a good pinch of sea salt.

Or go mad and have something other than orange, I like pink grapefruit or mango and apple myself

Actually my favourite is Teisseire fruit syrup. I'm not sure if you can buy it in the UK, but returning from french holidays I always stash a few cans (it comes in cans rather than bottles) in with the wine. The best flavour is the peach, not just for the taste but because of the instant boost. Far better than any disgusting gels or 'sports' drinks.

How far do you get before you throw-up?

Have yet to throw-up, have also used cold green tea in the mix and that works well as you get a hit of caffeine and these benefits :-
1. There is significantly less caffeine in the average cup of tea - especially when including green and white teas brewed at shorter times and cooler temperatures.
2. L-theanine, an amino acid found only in tea, reduces stress and promotes relaxation. It works with caffeine in a synergistic way to calm the body without reducing caffeine alertness.
3. The high levels of antioxidants found in tea slow the absorption of caffeine - this results in a gentler increase of the chemical in the system and a longer period of alertness with no crash at the end.
Drink tea = no crashes how good is that :-))
