My brother and I purcahsed a Subway LTD from Halfords Thurrock a week ago and have had nothing but problems. We decided to ride them home from Lakeside, about 6 miles, but only got a few miles before one of the bikes wouldn't shift gear, and then the plastic gear display thing (I'm a novice!) exploded, fell on the floor and I ran over it. We took it back, they fixed it. Not pleased, but there you go. But this wasn't the end of our troubles, both bikes constantly slip gears, won't shift, make god awful noises. I don't know bikes, but these were just not fit for purpose. They both went back and were fixed again. But, there just as bad, and my brothers chain slipped the cog (unsure of terms here) which threw him from the bike and ruined some of the paint work on the bike.

We are taking them both back today, are we within our rights to receive our money back? I just want rid of these bikes.

I swapped my Subway LTD for the tdf road bike yesterday they were fine taking it back and in fairness the ltd was loverly once they sorted the gears but I just wanted a road bike. There was no fuss in the exchange and I suspect a full refund would also have been fine.
I did take it back to a different store than where I bought it though because they had the road bike in stock and sounded much more knowledgeable on the phone.

I think Halfords is a bit pot luck regards staff. It is a bit worrying to see families walking out the door with bikes for there kids.
A wrongly setup or missed check I guess could harm some one or much worse bit scarey that.

This is the good thing about Halfords. They are so large, a refund or replacement is not much skin off their nose. But try getting a refund or exchange from your LBS.
The shop is legally obliged to either repair, replace or refund. The LBS will repair every time. Sometimes after some discussion about 'statutory warranty' and 'not fit for purpose'.

I have never got that far due to the fact that if the bike started clicking, I'd adjust it myself.
In fact, I don't trust ANYONE other than myself to do the 'spanner check' on a bike I'm going to ride.
My bike, my life. Elliminate other people's incompetance.

I bought a Subway 8. I took it away in the carton. I showed them my CTC member's card and my Audax member's card and they were happy to 'get off the hook'.
