First of all, yes I know there are other threads with similar topics however I haven't found one that covers all the bikes that I am looking at. It's a lot of money for me so I'm keen to get it right rather than ending up on a donkey!

My budget is £700 to £1000 for a sportif road bike (90 mile round trip occasional commute plus weekend rides/sportifs). I've spoken to all my local independent bike shops and they all recommend major brands (Specialised, Giant and Trek). They even go as far as recommending to avoid anything that is not in those 3 brands. I also called into Evans and as well as their own brand they mentioned a Bianchi (which is a very nice looking bike).

Having spoken to a couple of friends they are mainly saying the opposite (i.e. you can get more for your money if you avoid the main brands). 2 of them have Planet X's which they swear by. They also mentioned Ribble and Focus. My concern about the Planet X (and any carbon) is how I would carry my clothes and laptop on the commute. I know I can put it on my back but I expect the putting it on the bike is better?

My shortlist is currently:

Specialized Secteur Elite 2011 (from local independent)
Trek 1.5 Compact 2011 (from different local independent)
Bianchi Via Nirone 7 Tiagra Compact 2011 (from Evans)
Planet X SL Pro Carbon SRAM Rival (online or preferably GB Cycles if the price is the same as online (i.e. I would rather buy in a store that online))

A quick comparison of three of the above using Evans is here: Evans

I know there are Ribbles of a similar spec to the Planet X but to keep the shortlist manageable I've opted for the PX (partly as I know two satisfied customers).

I'm upgrading from a Claude Butler hybrid so this will be my first with drops.

My vitals are 5'8" and about 12 stone and I work for a company that has chosen not to partake in the C2W scheme. Fitness is ok but not amazing (I completed several Sportifs and a charity London to Paris last year and was in the front couple of packs for most of the L2P).

I'm mainly interested in thought on the above bikes, however if there is something really obvious that I should be considering please let me know. I'm expecting a barrage of people saying "get the Planet X", but I'm really interested in comments on the others - particularly the Bianchi as I love the Italian styling.

Cheers

HI,
Dont know if this is useful but my misses bought a Bianchi 105 Dama from Epic Cycles for £999 (this included a pro fitting), im pritty sure i saw aswell in the shop the 105 Black Male version (the only difference in the bikes is the paint job) with out the Squadra edition for £999. It may be worth while giving them a call, they were very helpful when we went up there.

I have a Secteur Sport and I love it. It has relaxed frame geometry for a slightly more upright ride, I think it is the only one out of that list that does. But then again I am no expert on bikes. I love mine, you should maybe try one or two of the others and the Secteur to see if you prefer the relxed geometry option. Good luck

Thanks for all the replies. From what I can work out there isn't a wrong choice out of the 4. I've had comments (on here and elsewhere) from people that own all 4 and all of them like their bikes.

My next job is to go and test ride and haggle to see what the true price of each bike will be (once pedals and shoes are including as I'm switching from SPD to SPD SL).

More comments always welcome - especially from owners of the above bikes. Positive or negative comments are both good.

Thanks again

Boardman Team Carbon.

I'd love to have that bike.

The alu is a better bike!

so you want a fast(ish) road bike for 100 mile sportives that can carry panniers for work laptop? Sounds like you need TWO bikes to me!

The Specialized sectuer could fit the bill.

As for sticking with the big brands that nonsense - Trek bikes are awful IMO, and Giant make a limited number of frame sizes so you could easily fall in between sizes which would be no good either.

I have a Focus Cayo and it's great BUT certainly no good for commuting and carrying panniers. It also has a fairly racey riding position so depending on fitness you might suffer doing 100 miles on it (or a similar bike)

You're killing me...

Sorry waht i mean by that is the frame is a better quality of build the components are awful on the alu, and as the frame is the heart of a bike the then alu with the same components as the carbon would be a better bike. This is due to the weave on the boardman carbon not being anywhere neaver what you see in the quality of weave on a carbon bike. How can boardman do a bike with the same group set as a 1500 pound bike. Simple, they put realy cheap wheels and frame on the bike. The matter of fact that a full carbon frame and forks with a quality build is gona set you back £800+.
If u think about it the bianchi Via Nurone which has carbon forks and rear stay has the 105 group set at £999 - £1100 depending on where you buy. From talking with my LBS man and a guy from halford they said that they regularly see problems with the boardman frame and wheels that come standered with it.

Thanks for all the replies I popped into GB Cycles today and think that I have got it down to the Bianchi and the Planet X. No particular reason as I think they are all similar 'value' (possibly with the Planet X being a bit of a steal) but I like the Italianess of the Bianchi and so many people have recommended the Planet X I would be a fool not to keep it in the list.

I like the idea of upgrading to the 105 on the Bianchi but prefer the colour scheme of the Tiagra spec... Plus the Tiagra keeps me in budget.

I'm going to test ride both next week to see if one or the other is a better fit and take it from there.

Thanks again for the comments and helping guide me through this maze!!

Cheers
