I've had some tubes (the original ones that came with my "entry level" Trek) that had really nasty valves, and it was very difficult to get the pump on them. I'd think I had the pump on the valve, pump up to 100-110, which was really hard, take the pump off again and head off for a ride. It was only when I noticed the tyres seemed to be getting softer and softer that I realised the pump wasn't locking on the valve properly, and I'd just been building up pressure in the tube on the pump!

Eventually I solved the problem by letting all the air out of the tyres first, then pumping them up. It was much easier to get the pump on the valve that way, and you could also see when it was on properly because the tyre started to inflate.

Regarding the "squeeze" test, this is what I do most days, and top my tyres up once or twice a week. I press my thumb against the rolling edge of the tyre, and if it's still at 110, there's barely any give in it at all. If you can squish it slightly, chances are your pressure has dropped.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I have 2 brands of track pumps - one with a narrow barrel (actually one of LIDL's much criticized, now about 5 years old - in fact I liked it so much I bought 2 of them - the one with a metal barrel), and one with a wider barrel (a BETO). Have no problems whatsoever getting to 110+ psi with the narrow barrel LIDL , but the wider barrel one is a real struggle above about 85psi (in fact it is great for topping up car tyres). Both pumps are now fitted with Topeak brass chucks with pressure relief button - highly recommended. Narrower barrel - higher pressure (road bike tyre), wider barrel - lower pressure (MTB tyre).

Excuse me for being a bit thick, but which bit is the barrel?
