Not sure about flames but a kettle of boiling water poured over the crank end can help. Aluminium expands more than steel so have the pedal pointing forward, the spanner pointing back with just a few degrees of up so when you stand on the spanner it'll move 1/2" or so in the desired direction, then pour the boiling water steadily over the crank end and once done stand on the spanner. I usually have the front wheel against the wall so the bike doesn't move.

Well so far my son has tried several of the methods recomended here...the pedal is still stuck rigid!
I would take it down the Project, but need it for Saturday morns club ride & the w'shop isn't open tommorrow - It may a trip on the top of the car & stop off at the LBS on the way home from work moro

A tip for next time - grease the pedal bolt well as you're installing it. I've never had a problem either with getting a pedal off when I want to or with a pedal coming off when I don't want it to.

I do that when putting my own pedals on, but the ones i'm having probs with are the originals that came with the bike.
I was going to put the same type on it as what I have on my Spesh, found a set on Ebay for half the normal price, but they were black.
My Spesh is black, my GT is silver, so bought the new black pedals, put them on my Spesh & am trying to put the silver ones off that on my GT - It all sounded so simple when I mentally planned it out

nnnoooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the same thing, took it in to the bike shop, and they had what looked like a bit of gas pipe that went over the end of the allen key, giving them about two feet of leverage. It worked.

The schoolboy error is trying to apply force with the crank on the bike, it's an awkward arangement at best.

If you have a crank puller take the crank arm off, place the spanner (not the crank) in a vice and then offer the pedal up to it, tap crank with a rubber mallet, crank comes free.

I dont like lot's of leverage being involved if it's attached to the bike.

The pedals don't have an allen key fiting, damn nasty nasty pedals!

If I had a vice in my garage at home this would be fab advice

Get thee to the LBS if you have a friendly one that won't charge "I think I should get barristers rates" money.

I have access to a whole workshop of tools, vices, stands & just about anything else bikey, at the local Bike Project I volunteer at, but it's not open til Sat morn, about 2 hours after I need my bike...So fingers crossed the LBS will be 'kind' to me

I wedged a pile of hardback books under my cranks to stop them moving, and by standing on the pedal spanner I was using my weight rather than arm strength to loosen my pedals.

I've also heard of bike shops using the equivalent of Dellzeg's gas pipe where all else has failed.

The best thing is allen key heads that are designed to use with a 1/2" drive, then use a long breaker bar, works everytime, however absolutely no use for Funnymummy as the problem is with cheapy pedals not designed to be used with allen keys.

One of mine was really stuck on a while ago, a few kettles of boiling water poured over the bit you're trying to undo works wonders.. came off really easily in the end, no forcing involved. Don't forget some grease when you refit pedals though, should help if you have to take them off again in future

Popped into the new Giant store in Shoreham (they are 'supporting' our junior branch of the club)
Very nice man, `removed my bike from the roof bars, twiddled the pedal with a VERY long handled spanner, announced "Oh that is on tight" gave it a good yank & wahoooooey, one free'd pedal!
Turned out that the threads were very narrow/sharp & the pedal had obvioulsy been put in slighlty off kilter.
No charge & friendly service - Oh I do love a man with a long spanner

Arrange the spanner so that it is alongside the crank with its end adjacent to the centre of the BB. In this way, when you push down on it you won't rotate the cranks at all. Then stand on it or whack it with a mallet. Never fails. Always unscrew pedals and BBs towards the rear of the bike.
