If it was mine I would use a hacksaw to saw the nut completely in half - you could melt the nylon nut with heat - but that would damage the paintwork.

Use a hacksaw to make a slot in the bolt head. Then use a big flat screwdriver to hold it whilst you wrangle the nut off.

That's not going to help. However, I note that the nut is slightly castellated, so it could be possible to cut a slot into the nut across the indentations to turn it with a screwdriver. But I fear that might not have any more success than using the socket, adjustable or pliers to turn it.

Dremmel and cutting blade would make short work of that. The suggestion for using a screwdriver after cutting a notch may work as no pressure will be applied to the nut and plastic that would be pressing into the threads.

Other possibility is to use a screwdriver or other such implement in one of those small notices and try to tap it off to loosen it with a hammer. Also a bit of lubricant around the thread if possible may help get the little so and so turning.

A plumber's pipe wrench has a self-tightening action as it's designed exactly for that kind of problem. Once you've removed that nut you can use the wrench on your cassette locknut tool and for any plumbing jobs around the house. Don't be tempted to buy a cheap one though.

Alternatively, grind the nut off with an angle grinder, going slowly so as to avoid heat build-up. Whereabouts in the country are you?

Hacksaw is the easiest solution, if the bolt is not turning you could drill straight down from the nut end to the same size as the bolt.

I use Irwin Bolt/Nut removers on rounded off nuts n bolts........with your nut being in reasonable shape maybe a suitable Irwin would fit the coachbolt and remove it that way.....replace with a new nut & bolt....
^ this x1000 - get an Irwin nut remover on the nut and turn... it'll come off in seconds
Or if you don't have one / want to buy a set , then a small chisel used as a drift to tap the nut round.Using heat first will help , too
I've rebuilt enough old motorbikes to have extensive experience in this area...

The nut DOES turn, folks. It just won't come off the bolt (which DOES NOT turn).

Hope this clarifies the situation.

So the thread has failed and somehow the nut has become locked onto the bolt? It turns on the bolt but won't unscrew? From your middle picture it looks as if somebody has peened the head of the bolt causing it to expand.

What happens if you force a wedge between the two pieces of the stand to push the nut upwards then unscrew it?

Nice colourful proggie mat, by the way.

So now you've filled your workshop with umpteen tools that havn't/won't do the job...

As clarion has noticed, this doesn't look loke a normal nut. Personally ive not come across 'one use' nuts, but that may be what it is, a safety feature maybe.
I suspect that large nylon section is no longer stuck to the surrounding nut and the nut is spinning around it....and that may be a deliberate feature.
Ultimately, throw away all the tools you've hypothertically brought...and use a hacksaw.
If you have an angle grinder and a slitting disc and a steady hand, that would do as well.

One of my favourite tool buys of all time is my set of Irwin nut remover sockets. Even used them to remove lock nuts on my son's Volvo when he lost the key nut. It doesn't sound like they will work for this job - but buy a set anyway! Irwin's rock!
