I genuinely don’t see the issue. If you expect a service that isnt funded by members, but costs a significant sum of money to run, but don’t expect there to be anything in it for the owners then you’re pretty naieve or a liar.

Fair enough, they need to tell you, but don’t complain when they do tell you and you have the choice over whether you let them have your data.

Who is complaining?

So far nobody on this thread knows what they’re trading for the Strava service. I think that says enough.

Have you had feedback yet from Strava following your request for info as the expresser of concern in the OP?

What kind of data can you get from the app?

Your home address
When you house is likely to be empty
Your bank details if on premium
Who you cycle with
Your heart rate data
The make and models of your bikes
How much you exercise each week
Where you stop to eat and drink
Where you work
Your hours of work
...

All if which can be altered in the settings. Well nearly all, but what they are going to do with the fact some people work 9 to 5 is a bit of a mystery to me.

The house thing is easy as well, I have at least 4 rides recorded on my Garmin 200 that I've yet to upload. I'll hopefully be in by the time I do.

Change you setting has bugger all affect on what the people behind Strava may be doing with the data

Not very sensitive though.

The tone of your post suggested there was some dark unthought of use for our data.

Well, there is that possibility but unless someone else has had some luck looking into it I don’t know if they share any data with anyone yet, let alone why.

But that’s not the same thing as complaining - at least not yet

I am now intrigued as to what they may say. Not bothered what they do with mine tbh.

I think it’s a fair trade for the service tbh. In saying that, I am a premium member so do contribute anyway. I like analysing segments to understand what makes two efforts different and what works and doesn’t.

Pretty cool seeing time loisses where I have deliberately gone harder at the start of a climb to see the performance dip sharpish later on, as expected.

The complaining comment wasn’t meant specifically for you btw. I was making a general statement about the usual complaints about companies using data which they have exchanged for a “free” service. Like it’s a shock. Wasn’t aiming for it to sound like a dig.

I decided to accept the Ts&Cs which allowed me to see the Privacy Policy. Some excerpts:

  • We also obtain additional third party information about members from marketers, partners, researchers, and others. We may combine information that we collect from you with information obtained from other members, third parties and information derived from any other subscription, product, or service we provide. We may also collect information about you from other members such as when they give you kudos or comment about you.
  • We collect information from your browser, computer, or mobile device, which provide us with technical information when you access or use the Services. This technical information includes device and network information, cookies, log files and analytics information.
I wonder who is selling information about us as individuals to Strava?

There’s quite a bit about third parties but nothing surprising or revealing - it’s too vague.

They put our information into third party analytics platforms - probably at least Google analytics.

They aggregate and sell our information to third parties.

If you use third party apps on Strava, they get your information too and it’s not Strava’s responsibility - this is the area where the Cambridge Analytics issue occurred in Facebook.

Nothing of any surprise then @Tin Pot. All of those things need to be in the terms as they are held on their systems after the users input them. Would be shocked if they weren’t tbh.
