I have a wired Cateye on one bike and Cateye wireless on another. For the same route the wired will show 15.96 miles the wireless 15.89 miles. I think set up has something to do with it. For one I just put in the tire size, for the other I measured the length of one tire rotation and entered it.

Close enough for me to not worry about trying to get them closer.

100 metres of difference over 16 miles and you're disputing?... You could line up a car, bus, mortorbike and 20 bikes and get different readings over that distance. I know they were on the same bike, but it's less than 0.5% different.

That is on different bikes. It is close enough for me. Getting things totally precise with measurements is difficult and Strava racers probably don't want to hear that. Strava is good to compete with for practice but the only way to really race is same time same place all conditions the same.

No, that's not 'close enough', that's 'The same'.

You could push the same bike 100 times and never come up with the same figure twice. You'll never take the same route twice. The 100 metre difference is not a computer fault.

It is consistantly different on the bikes. With one being more than the other..that being said sometimes I do go a little further and a little less on the routes and I have not set up a scientific experiment. I realize you don't ride the same route exactly the same every time, but I have ridden them enough to realize that one is different from the other and they are not "The same". I will also wager you that I can do the route 100 times on the same bike and come up with the same (computer mileage listed) more than twice...just need to make sure my air pressure is correct
I am going to go out and start practicing my precision distance riding techniques on my 10 mile route right now. :boxing:

Interesting that some say the galaxy s2 GPS is a bit inaccurate, it logged me as cycling from Africa the other week. In half an hour too ;)
I thought it was a fault with my phone specifically and Was considering taking it back but if it's just a common problem then probably not much point?

So I just used strava for the first time today. I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and live in a rural area so having read the posts on here about the GPS not being great, I wasn't expecting much. So I was fairly pleasantly surprised when it showed 26.5 miles instead of the 26.8 miles my trip computer showed. That's a difference not much more than 1% and my trip computer will have some margin of error so I have no complaints there.

The only thing I don't understand is that when I got home and uploaded the ride on my phone, it showed 1200 feet of elevation gain yet when I looked again it is now only 865 feet. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

It's quite annoying because in two weeks I am doing a Sky Ride with almost exactly the same distance as I have just done and an elevation gain of 400m, so around 1200 feet. Now I'm not sure whether I have done a similar ride, or not.

Here's the ride: http://app.strava.com/rides/23471193

Oh also, I've been on a couple of website that calculate calories burned during various activities. For my weight they estimate I have burned 1700-1900 calories on that run but despite the fact that I've entered my weight into Strava, it shows just 783 calories burned. That really doesn't seem right at all.
