Yes but by each individual making private segments they then can't see, nor can other not so great riders see how they are performing against others.

Individuals have always been able to make segments private. That isn't changing.

Strava is making the ones with bad GPS data (not sure how they determine that) private.

Which goes back to my original thought that they are heading towards an "elitist" platform with a bias on "better riders"
They have always been that really. As soon as you have KOMs and professional riders are including their races, those immediately take all the top of the leaderboard on any significant segment.

The only problem with that is that if a lot of us plebs are taking nothing from the platform then we will stop paying which will eventually push up the price for those who are left.

I really don't see the changes as being even noticeable to the vast majority of us plebs. A few of our segments which had duplicates may appear to change name and suddenly have twice as many riders on the list. And a few "bad" segments may disappear.

As someone who uploads rides manually after the event, and ignores segments, I really don't care. A friend whose partner chases segments described them as 'a good ride ruined'.

I stopped paying for strava when they had of offer for new premium subscribers at about half price of my renewal.

I said I'd go back premium when I got a good deal..I haven't had a good deal, and I miss it less than I thought.

A lot of the new developments just don't interest or matter to me.

One thing they did a few years ago which I think helped keep segments fresh was to award "empty cups" for efforts that year. I think that was a great idea and helped keep the segment challenge fresh.

Thanks for that ,I hadden seen it , I did do 1 of the top 75 midlands climbs at the weekend and it didn't update and I was pulling my hair out as to why so I downloaded the app again on to another device and that gave me 1 less than I'd already done 🤣 .

I did one of the official Midlands climbs today (Eakring Hill)

Right at the top is a bridleway for a square grab, so I went up it, along the bridleway and then back down again.

I thought it was okay, I only noticed it was one as I was looking at Strava, I did a climb earlier that I thought was harder, though it was much shorter, but kicked right at the end, then I went down the other side, turned and did an even steeper road back up the same hill. Bloody square grabbing

Thinking about it, those climbs we did on the Alton Towers ride were much harder than Eakring Hill

Wonders if the purge will then allow for the bike segment basic data to be copied for ebike recordings, which would hopefully stop ebikes clogging up the bike data.
Their was a third party script that would copy segements across but that has not worked for ages.
