The strangest encounter I ever had happened one night at around midnight, about 25 years ago when I fell off my bike in the dark after visiting the girl I was going out with a the time. The road this happened on is one that passes a housing estate which was known locally for being a bit 'rough' but isn't near any of the houses.
As I was picking myself up off the floor, I heard a female voice asking if I was okay and looked up to see a middle aged woman who told me that she was a nurse. I replied that yes, thanks I was okay and she then started saying that I probably thought it was odd that a woman was out on her own in that area at that time of night.
I mumbled something like 'not really' and she then said 'you don't have to worry about me, I can look after myself, I've got a knife with me'. When she offered that piece of information, I made my excuses and left, as they used to say in the News of the World.
