What is the advantage of a feeding ring?

It keeps the food together, which has two advantages:

• It's easy to see if any food is left uneaten. If the fish don't eat it within five minutes, the food is removed from the water, and less is given next time
• Any uneaten food can't drift away and get lost in the pond, where it decomposes and fouls the water

I thought I'd worked out what caused the disc of weed.
When I looked today it was still there, but now it was rotating slowly under the influence of water coming from the fountain. So I turned the fountain off.
Two hours later, the disc had moved around the pond, but hadn't broken up at all.
Fountain now back on, and disc back in same place as yesterday.

If it's still there tomorrow, I intend to break it up by hand and see if it re-forms.
