Thanks for all your replies. I'll see how the adjustment goes until the first service, then when the front mech is changed will possibly upgrade shifters to sora/tiagra to allow trimming.

I will also in the mean time practise with my gears to understand what I do and don't need.

First time out BTW I did 30 miles in 1hr 40 mins - averaging 18mph. It was in the Bedfordshire/Herts country side so not particularly hilly but reasonably pleased with that!

my sora bike does occasionally have the chain rub the rings (probably because it needs adjusting). however, you can trim the mech using a subtle movement of the l/h brake lever to the right to solve the problem on the road. which probably explains why i haven't bothered adjusting it.

my tiagra bike only suffers from rub in bad gear combinations.
