Well after a late start I got out and did a 50 miler. 3hours 5 mins with and average of 16.2mph. Cwmbach to Brecon via Aberdare / Trecynon Bypass, A4059 and A470 loop for anyone who knows the area. I had a lovely bump from the back wheel which turned out to be caused by my poor fitting of the back tyre. That said I love the extra speed, the lack of noise (most of the time - I still need to tweak the friction shifter) and my ability to get up hills at a speed I never dreamed of. OK by many roadies standards I am still very slow but I am pleased with the way things are going.

Excellent mate. I'm also loving it. Only been riding a few months and have seen good improvements in my fitness speed and stamina. Keep it up

Averages are hard to compare between people in different areas due to so many factors that affect them. Just keep an eye on your average and see if it is increasing when cycling on similar terain.

I like the colour, people can't say they didn't see you!

Yep I'd go with that, I also have no idea what's good, but mine are getting quicker, and it's easier getting up the hills. Will of course feel very slow when I have another go with club tomorrow, but it's all a learning curve. Just read about their 30 mph plus chaingang! Will give that a miss for a few more months

I can hit 30mph but not maintain it!!!!

An average of 16.2 mph over 3 hours is bloody good even on a dead flat road: the only thing that differentiates between averages is the terrain and if you had some hills on yours then I would say that it was pretty commendable looking at your photo!

I dont know the fitness levels of the OP but he states he has just purchased his road bike, it may not be the lightest in the world and he may have plenty to learn but he clearly has a half decent fitness level and that average in my opinion is bloody good for his first trip on his road bike...so there

Thank you very much indeed.

I am 16 stone and have been MTBing for around 3 years. The road bike is around 11K with a double 55 44 and 14-28 set up. My fitness level is debatable. I was 10th from last in my last 80Km MTB Marathon but then around 30+ people failed to finish. I do have strong legs but need to work on my ability to maintain speed. It was my 2nd trip BTW. My first was the same route with an average of 15mph
