We've got 8 for dinner on Saturday, friends of Mrs rich p - fairly discerning folk unlike my own low-life lot. The main course is something fancy with a loin of pork, apparently, and I have been delegated to come up with something for the starter. Any suggestions, however exotic? p.s. One is gluten-free and one doesn't do crustacea.

2 x tins Family Size Heinz Tomato soup. Exotic enough?

rich is looking forward to girding his loin...

Tzaziki heaped into a large mushroom with '11-cog' sized pieces of carefully cut (by mr rich p) pitta bread. A little bit of something spicy at the bottom of the mushroom cup might be nice to add piquancy...but no fat duck. ;)

Have a lovely time.

I never bother with starters - just have another beer or glass of grape juice.

I've been delegated Ed!!!!!!!

Apparently you've got to always put a pair of crossed deep fried batons of something long and thin in a cross shape on top to give that Masterchef joie de vivre... parsnip or carrot would do plus a squiggle of truffle oil on the side!

There whatever it ends up as , it will look arty!!

If one drops out I can make up an eighth rich!

Tomatoes, red yellow and orange peppers, good mozzarella, fresh basil, black pepper, olive oil, a dash of balsamic vinegar.
Chop the tomatoes and peppers, smallish but chunky. Tear up the mozzarella and basil. Put it all in a bowl and drizzle the olive oil and balsamic. Chuck some parma ham in if you want.

I think you'll find pitta is not gluten free. Tzaziki is greek youghurt wiht cucmber and garlic - very tasty but would have as it with an aperitif, not as a starter.

How about a small piece of smoked salmon with small salad leaves and garnished with a sprig of parsley and a lemon segment?
A cheat alternative is to go to M&S where you should find salmon terrine wrapped in smoked salmon - very tasty! Garnish as above.

Now if you are looking for something to drink with starters and pork, that I can help you with!!!
