Just as I changed down to finish my commute yesterday morning the right hand shifter snapped off - from the main housing rather than the plastic/carbon lever. I am now left with the gear lever/shifter completely separate from the brake lever. Just glad it didn't happen 10miles earlier!

Has anyone else had this problem?

Yes, happened to me earlier this year, when the shifter stopped shifting

.

The shifter lever has a vertical spring and 'bar' around which it moves. The shifter had fractured at this point, so it was no longer shifting. I hope the attached photos will give a clearer indication of what I mean !

The good news is that SRAM have a 2 year warranty on their equipment. After email discussion with Condor Cycles, from whom I had bought the bike 18 months previous, I sent the whole shifter back and I was able to get a free replacement (after a few weeks). The delay was caused by SRAM wanting to satisfy them selves that it was a genuine claim.

It's worked fine since - and I learnt a lot too !

Cheers Scoosh. That looks exactly the same problem as mine. Its gone back to Wiggle and they have indicated its a warranty claim so I should be OK.

Just going to be a pain riding the Selkirk event on Saturday using my back-up. Would have preferred to use my carbon machine as my overall fitness is struggling.

Thanks for the info.

That sounds really poor (especially SRAM dragging their heels on you claim, Schoosh). I've never even considered that a shifter could break, simply because in my many years of cycling I've never seen it (except as a result of an off)

Is this a reflection of SRAM's overall quality and hence why they're able to get what is seemingly 'race' quality into the same price bracket where the Shimano alternative would just be 'solid kit'. If so I think I'll stick with the big 'S' thanks.

sshhhh

If it were the result of an off, it took a few months to manifest itself ...

Can you believe it ? My Left Hand shifter broke yesterday - in the **same place**

Contacted Condor and, although they haven't heard of anyone else having their shifters break, are going to get SRAM to replace under warranty

... which, of course, officially expired 2 weeks ago

Off to remove whole shifter and send it to Condor.

**on the shifter, not the same place on the road - that would have been really weird

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Mine was bent at 90 degrees due to an off and i managed to bend it back as the LBS quoted me £210 to replace the whole shifter.

before and after..

AHA !

Those good folks at Condor reckon I must have bits from a bad batch and, as far as they are concerned, it's a Warranty job

They'll get on to SRAM and get it replaced ... so it is currently on its way to Condor for them to throw at take to SRAM.

Ugh - this thread doesn't fill me with confidence. I am expecting to take delivery of a SRAM Rival equipped bike within the next couple of days. How does it shape up, generally? Video review I saw couldn't praise it highly enough. Apparently lighter than Ultegra and as accurate as DA or Record!

I love the SRAM operating method and really like the whole system.

Unfortunately, I seem to have had a couple of weakly made shifter bits, which have caused the hassle.

Having said that, maybe it is only me and sayek1 with breakages.

SRAM shifters are great - but I guess its what you are used to. Having only used SRAM I didnt like the Shimano when I had a bike fitted with them.

As usual Wiggle have been fantastic. Sent the shifter straight back to them. Received a pair of the next model up (Force) about 3-days later. Local bike mechanic fitted both and within 24hrs of me passing on the mechanics bill my Wiggle account was credited with the full amount. Wiggle have yet to disappoint me in their customer service.

As for SRAM I can't fault their approach either and will make the assumption that the break was just a manufacturing fault which they sorted quickly.

All in all a good result.
