Had an issue at the weekend when my chain snapped on an audax. Managed to reconnect and completed the ride with no other issues.
However I have now got a new chain and taken out links by measuring the chain that snapped. Installed the chain using as a guide, wrapping the chain round both large sprockets. However when I come down the sprocket size on the back the chain is very slack.
I look at the rear derailleur and it looks like tension is not present?? Could be wrong.
Because the rear derailleur was under force when the chain snapped have I damaged the derailleur as well?? Nothing was obvious after the chain had snapped to give me any indication that the derailleur was malfunctioning.
It is a sram apex with long cage.
Many thanks

Loch side.
Yes, you messed up your rear derailer. I take it the chain broke in a way where the sideplate popped off on one side of the chain and instead of just harmlessly dropping down on the road, it jammed everything and you came to an abrupt halt. If that is the case, you need professional help.

Thanks for replying.
I was starting to go up a hill the chain snapped but just dropped on the floor. So it was under some strain.
After putting the chain back on the bike's performance was ok so I did not expect an issue with the derailleur. But after putting the new chain on it appears obvious.

Have you put the chain through the pulley wheels correctly???

Hi thanks for replying.
Yes I have installed the chain through the correct path of the jockey wheels.
When I push the bottom of the rear mech (bottom jockey wheel) back towards the cassette there is no tension at all its very slack.
I don't understand that if this is my problem and its knackered, why did I not get an inkling about it after putting back the chain to complete the ride.
Thanks

Yeah, time for a photo.
pic taken. chain put on after measuring it against previous chain and 3 complete links taken off the new chain. Picture shows the new chain on both large ring/sprocket. 20161019_172042.jpg

Have you checked rear mech alignment, it is very likely to be out. Although that would have little to do with tension.

Odd that it was OK post chain fix/ bodge, but not with new chain. Photo?

Has a spring come unhitched within the RD
Thanks for replying to my post.
I have no idea if a spring is missing. It worked with no issues when I fixed the chain and continued with the audax.
After fitting the new chain, shifting was no different either.

Is there a cage lock on that rear mech.....cause it shouldnt stay in that position if the chain is slack???

Not sure what you mean by that.
By hand I can move the cage easily no restriction at all.
On my other bike there is tension.

Very hard to see what's going on from a dark photo against a cluttered dark back ground, but it does look a bit knackered. It looks like it's springing forward instead of backwards, but that would be weird. LBS or knowledgeable friend time I think.
