What? £3,75 each?!
£3.99 for 3 at CRC

Oops. Well spotted. I apologise. I dashed into Evans in Chiswick a few weeks ago in a big hurry to get a ten speed link before a FNRttC. They charged me that price for one link. I winced.

Methinks the HG70 chain may also work on a 5 speed bike too.If it is 7.4mm width my theory is that for trekking you need extra width to allow for all the extra mud and crap you get going off-road.
The norm for 8 speed is in fact 7.1mm.

Well the LBS have come up trumps.
They tried a connex 8 speed and it fits OK. It does not lock as tight as the SRAM ones and it is quite easy to get it to come apart. But it shouldn't come undone as it is constanly under tension from the rear mech.
I will fit it at the weekend and see if it works OK.
So now I have 3 SRAM links that are no good to me.

Well the link fitted and seemed to be OK.
Until, that is, I changed to the smallest gear on the cassette, whereby the chain kept jumping.
I quickly realised that it happened once per chain revolution.
It was fine on all other rear gears, and using a different chainring did not stop it.
Further examination revealed that it was whenever the powerlink disengaged from the cassette.
It was particularly bad when under load.
So back to the LBS it is then.

You might want to take a look at this document.

I believe your HG70 has 7.3mm wide pins.

Sram 7 speed chains have 6.9mm or 7.1mm wide pins.

KMC 7 speed chains and their Missing Links come in 7.1mm and 7.3mm* versions.

Wipperman 7 speed chains are 7.2mm wide but the associated Connex Link is 7.8mm wide.

* This will fit fine if all else fail.

Hope it helps.

PoweredByVeg I am indebted to you. Thanks pal!
I turned the link the other way up and it works perfectly.
I don't recall seing any indication about this is the instructions.

Note to self though:
When going out for a quick test ride, it is fine to go in your overalls, but it is not a good idea to go without your eye protection.
My eyes are still stinging 2 hours after due to drowning many, many flies.
