1980s to my knowledge the earliest set I've got are on a pair of Weinmann type 500 and they are 30+ years old

Don't know when it came in, but it's been on my bikes for 25 years or more...
I came to road bikes this year, before that I started riding on MTB 2.5 years ago. I did have a Peugeot road bike 28 years ago, and what was on that is anyone's guess! All I remember was that the gear levers were on the down tube without any indexing!

Smash the cistern
Campagnolo achieve the same thing with a little bar on the shifter which allows the brake lever to move back into the shifter housing, slackening the cable.

My old Carlton (1979-ish) had a button at the top of the brake lever. When you depressed it, it allowed the lever to rise another half inch or so and slacken off the brakes. Operating the lever clicked it out again, so no risk of riding around with loose brakes. I think they were Weinmann centre-pulls.
