Just bought a Specialized Sectuer Elite 2011 Model, whem im on the top sprog on the crank and gear down to roughly the 6/7/8 and the rear cassette the gears will jump down when applying additional pressure causing me to loose momentum.

Does the gear tention need adjusting? or is this a common problem with SRAM? The LBS warned me off SRAM before i bought the bike saying it was expensive and flawed with problems.

Sounds like a slight tweak of the barrel adjuster is needed, or take it in for it's 1st service/checkup.
Nothing to worry about I'd have thought, surprised about them warning you off Sram though, I have read a lot of good reviews of the Apex.

SRAM shifting is very slick when set up properly so no idea what your LBS is on about. If they set it up then just take it back and get them to sort it out, but it sounds like you just need to make a minor adjustment to the rear indexing. If you turn the barrel adjuster on the rear mech anti-clockwise it'll move the mech inwards a bit and outwards a bit if you turn it clockwise. Just make small adjustments - maybe 1/4 or 1/2 a turn and test it until it shifts up and down the entire cassette smoothly. There's no magic - it just takes a bit of trial and error to get it right.

I've got SRAM Rival on my ride. Lovely smooth gear changes. Just got it up on the work stand after buying and adjusted until everything moved when it should. Adjusted again after about 5-6 weeks. No problems since.

Is this a constant problem (happens all the time you change gear) or just the odd occasion? .. like others have said a tweak with the adjusters should cure the problem.

What part of Gateshead you from?

i bought the bike off chonkers on here, i will give him a bell and ask him where he got it from and if it requires a service before i start faffing about with it (im liable to make the problem worse!)

The LBS which i wont name, is complete tw@t to be fair, i stay away from the shop at all costs and travel accross town to a different one who provide an excellent service and non negitive feeback on anything i ask them!

He is a shimano dealer and is obviously touting his business, initially i was sold a bike to large for me, when ask about selling it back he gave me a stupidly low price, complete rip off merchant! Plus he looks like he hasnt rode a bike for years the fat barsteward!

Its only happens when im close to the bottom of the cassette i.e. around 6/7/8 mark.

I'm in Bensham near saltwell park, where you from and where do you ride? Its hard to find a decent route without loads of hill climbs!

One other thing, if the bike was bought 2nd hand do you know what kind of mileage has been done on it?
Could it be they are the most used sprockets and are a little worn?
Could be time for a new cassette and chain.

Thats exactly how the owner of my LBS looks. Says he rides a Felt AR4 but I cant see how he will ever be able to get his leg over cross bar. He also can never set up my SRAM gears either, always end up setting them myself. As to your problem I feel as others have said just needs some slight adjustment to the barrel adjuster.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Sounds a complete turd who just wants to flog what he knows.

My apex equipped boardman is very slick and i have not had to adjust it at all(apart from having to bend back a bent shifter after an off doh !) and i have had the bike since July.

I'm Leam Lane mate, so not far away

Since the whole area is built on hills, it's rather hard to avoid any of them, but along the Tyne route it's rather flat and some nice places to cycling. I've a number of routes I use, ranging from 15 miles up to 50 odd miles (depends how I'm feeling) so if you fancy an outing one day, just give me a shout

It would be nice have a bit of company on a ride for a change! Also to have a look around your routes etc... give me a shout when you next out, a saturday or sunday morning is preferable as i work 8 - 5 monday to friday and were loosing the light on a night time!

I believe the bike has done roughly 200 miles prior to me buying it and ive done roughly a 100 mile on it since. So the bike is technically brand new!
