I had the same thing recently. Turned out one of the pedals was slightly loose. Another common cause is chain ring bolts. Basically, you need to systematically check all these sorts of things before getting to the BB itself.
Yep. Oddly though I am quite pleased in a weird way, as I have never stripped down the crank and rings so it feels good to have figured out how to do it.

In the process it became clear that my bottom bracket was shot anyway (was convinced upon finding that, that this was the cause of the creak) so needed to be swapped out regardless. So all I have wasted is my own time and the loss of a mornings ride, that feels like a fair price to pay, to get to know the bike even better.

Drop out the rear wheel and tighten the rear skewer, It's worth a try, like i said i was convinced it was the BB , but turned out to be the skewer

The Glue that binds us together.
Try just pulling the crank of, easy enough job clean up the shaft, feel if the bearings are running smooth, if they are re grease the shaft and put it back together, If bearings feel rough you may have to replace them, But unless you know what you are doing let the lbs change the bearings.

Update today I have tighten seat post clam seat rails ,wd40 on jockey wheels ,lubed chain , retighten rear skewer, been for a test ride and for the first part bike was in ninja stealth mode ^_^ However during the first climb I detected the noise but much much quieter than before and if I wasn't listen for it I may not have heard it. Will see how things go in the next couple of rides then I think a trip to lbs will be called for. Thanks for all the advice
