Your standard approach is good for short sharp hills. Hit them hard and sprint over the top. Bigger guys can be good at this sort of climb as it is more a test of sprint (short term) power than aerobic power. It is fun to do this when you are in the company of good climbers as they are normally left behind twiddling their legs.
Unfortnately as hills get longer you will run out of available useable energy in your muscles before hitting the top of the hill. In this case you need to ride a bit more conservatively to allow your body to work aerobically. This is when taking is a bit easy for the first third of the climb is a good plan. You are then able to progressively increase the effort and finally reach the dribbling onto the top tube stage as you crest the hill.
