Sports rendered just about palatable on TV by great editing.

I once changed shifts at work because everyone bar me was a golfist. All day long they'd talk about their golf bats, how handicapped they were, which pitch they'd be playing on next, golf golf golf bloody golf.

I ended up being moved to a shift full of women, and even the incessant talk about Love Island was better than golf.

A workmate had a good way of dealing with a golf conversation. He'd mentioned that he had also played on the weekend and hit 72 .... pause ... but the second hole was a bit worse !

The thing is, if you're approaching from a position of ignorance, all sports are pretty boring. Take soccer, I've watched a few matches, and I'm generally bored because I know hardly anything about it. But loads of people watch it avidly and enjoy it, so I'm not knocking it.

Are there any sports that would appeal to the uninitiated without a fair old dollop of editorial input?

To be fair to golf, Crazy Golf is good. I'd watch that.

When I was living in Canada it was a televised event taken very seriously by those participating.

Human beings can be relied upon to take even the most preposterous of things with the utmost seriousness.

Have you ever wondered why any game ended up with rules? How did rugby for instance, which kinda started life as a mass particpation bull rush free-for-all, end up with a fiendishly complex rule system which requires a real knowledge of the game itself to even begin to understand? And don't get me started on American football. You need a fleet of referees each tasked to look for certain encroachments, different player position only able to do certain things.... sheesh, can't I just kick the ball towards the goal?

I never found any use for sports in any form, and at school I found several kinds of sports to avoid. One reason I was so happy on my last day at school was that it meant I'd never have to go into a sports lesson again.

I've never understood why people watch sports generally. especially the Olympics: you'll forget who won within the week, so why waste time watching?

That said, I'm glad sports are televised. It's good to know it's there and I'm deliberately not watching it.

I absolutely love the Olympics and other athletics, but yes, have to admit that a few months later I have usually forgotten who won what unless it was something really special like Josh Kerr beating Jakob Ingebrigtsen or similar.

I got into sport by trying to avoid it at school...

We could get out of school sports if we wanted to do a sport at the local leisure centre that wasn't available at school, so me and a mate took up squash to avoid school sports

We loved it!

I enjoyed sport at school as was pretty good at it. I played rugby for school and swam. Even the dreaded winter cross country runs were fun.

I played cricket at college. My specialist position was boundary fielder. At least that's where I kept being put. I did have a double digits * score once, though I'm not sure which I was more proud of - reaching 11 or the surviving the innings.

So things like gymnastics, figure skating, ski jumping etc leave me cold.

See my earlier post about rules. I've watched figure skating and thought 'that was pretty cool, I couldn't do that, gotta be worth a 10' only for the judges to disqualify them. It's all Crufts to me, I've no idea what they're looking for, or why.

I had the misfortune of going to see the Baltimore Orioles on a 6 day packed adventure to Washington DC back in the 90's.

Astonishingly slow play and utterly mind-numbing.

Amazing ! How different perspectives can be that is…..

I watched New York play a home game at the Yankees Stadium - and I thought it was the most fast paced, enjoyable, atmospheric and fan encompassing sports event I’ve been lucky enough to be part of. And I mean be part of. The fans really were made to be involved in the whole entertainment spectacle from pre start to after match completion…….
