Good answer. May be a little idealist but jeez, why all the bad feeling. We all like riding bikes! None of us are pros (I think) so unless we're talking about racing there's no real need for such competitiveness, the only person you have to beat is yourself. Let timing and stop strategies lie with each individual's conscience and forget about it.

here some people go sportives v audax!!! who cares as long as who does which ever, enjoys what they do!!

I've only done one so far so i'm certainly not experienced or an expert.

But I did it in one go, start to finish 60 miles with no stops.

I took food and liquid with me and only ever put a foot down for cars/junctions.

Time taken is just that, how long you take to get from the start to the finish. It sounds harsh but stops are your decision/problem surely.

Having said that though, there were shedloads of people on the one I did who had panniers or trailers with kids in and all sorts and were taking stops for snacks and chats etc, just chilling and having a good time getting round. It's just about getting on a bike, riding and having a good time. Why and how you do that is irrelevant IMO.

I think its good to have timing just for your own achievement measure. We do it on the Exmoor Beast and don't plan on changing the route until its voted to change it. That way you can try to beat your time each year. That with the awards gives you something to aim for, its personal, what you do with the time is up to you but its nice to have I think.
