Another benefit of a lock is improved prospects of a successful insurance claim.

Not on sportives, but when leaving my bike outside local shops (very rural neighbourhood) I use a cable and drape a bungee over/around/through each wheel. I have the bungees anyway for my shopping and they weigh very little. Figure the thief has to mess about untangling them - or they might cut the cable, leap on the bike and then come crashing to the ground as the bungees and their evil yellow hooks seize the wheels up good and proper. You do have to not mind untangling the bungees yourself of course, but you put them on so you know how to do it.

I like that idea. I permanently have bungees attached to the hooks in the boot for various things - cool box, bikes, the sort of stuff you move around in cars when you're a self-employed parent - and they are forever hooking on things and being a total pain. An excellent idea!

Ta! I suspect it might work best with small bungees in muted colours. The only thing about my bungees is they are big and orange...

Just got a "rape " alarm f am considering taking one on a club run for cake stops , it might not stop the thief but if they trip it when moving the bike it would make a right fecking noise .
Activated when the pin is pulled out .
.
Sounds like a good idea but how will the thief trigger the alarm?

I had thought about putting something like this through the chain ring

A lot of the bike thefts are not by walk by scum , they are prepared in advance , most sportives are well advertised with the route map and the stops , stick some cycle wear on , park up a cpl of hundred mtrs from the stop and just walk up to a bike, and off you go , takes seconds and its a couple of grand in the back of the car.

Dont let the thieving gits get your bike , take a small lock.
